This cartoon depicts American drinking culture compared to other countries’ drinking cultures, this case being Sweden and the Netherlands. The graphics demonstrate the excessive American drinking culture opposed to the responsible social drinking culture in Europe. Considering the laws in each country on the age to drink, it becomes evident that the problem in the United States is indeed the culture itself, not the limit. A recent study came out stating that in 2015, 31% vehicle related deaths in the US was due to alcohol while only 19% of vehicle related deaths in Sweden or the Netherlands was due to alcohol. Perhaps, even lowering the drinking age in the United States would begin education earlier on the responsible use of alcohol in order to move towards a culture of healthy drinking and safety.
