DIPJ, ALS, AAA, CISV.
CISV isn’t just another acronym. Nikita Raheja ’16, a devoted member said, “I think the thing that separates CISV from most organizations is that it is entirely focused on kids.”
Adults are simply there to make sure everything is safe. “A typical CISV scene would be about 40 kids in a circle on the floor discussing anything from gay rights to ways to practice sustainable development to the meaning of life,” she added.CISV gives kids across the world a chance to interact with each other to build friendships based on the understanding of different cultures. Lisa Taylor, Vice President of the Jacksonville chapter stated, “The glue that underpins all of its programs is friendship, in line with its founding belief that peace is possible through friendship and mutual understanding.” The differences between members build closer bonds. Junior GT Bosch said, “I originally just genuinely like the people. They were real, like no fake personas. Everyone just accepted who they were, and I could tell because everyone was wacky.”
CISV has traditions that is unique to its members, they have their fair share of songs and dances. “People from all different parts of the world know them too. And somehow the fact that we share those traditions regardless of where we come from unites us all.” Raheja said.
The organization offers seven types of programs around the world starting at age 11. Each program, whether in Turkey, Vancouver or Dallas, has a different purpose like leadership training or simply a fun mini-camp. Yet they all share the same goal of bringing children together around the world. CISV promotes equality and fairness; it informs members on how to accept one another regardless of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. The ultimate goal is to not only achieve global peace but also inner peace within every member.
Raheja added, “When you have people from all different cultures and backgrounds, the simple act of talking about life experiences can teach you amazing things about the world and about yourself.”                                                                               CISV
