Eminem is one of the most famous and successful rappers of all time. He has sold the most albums of any rapper and he is widely regarded by fellow rapper 50 Cent as the greatest rapper in history. From his more mainstream hip-hop songs, such as “My Name Is,” to his rapid-fire bars on “Rap God,” Eminem has a wide variety of in his songs. Sometimes it is almost as if different people write his songs, given his diverse styles. This is partially true. Eminem, like some other rappers such as Tyler, the Creator, has multiple per each of his songs, these personas are Marshall Mathers, EMINƎM, and Slim Shady. Each of these characters makes up the whole personality of this legendary rapper.
Marshall Mathers
Marshall is both Eminem’s kindest and most aggressive persona. This character is the one to whom Eminem puts his most emotion. Marshall Mathers is the rapper’s real name, so this may be the closest to how Eminem is in real life. He can be clearly present in songs such as “Somebody Save Me,” “Mockingbird,” and “Killshot” and is the presiding character in the albums “Recovery” and “Revival.” Marshall is the father of Haliey, and that can make him much more careful and defensive than Eminem’s other two personas. When Machine Gun Kelly directly spoke about Eminem’s daughter, it was Marshall Mathers who decided to step in. The song Eminem put out as a response to MGK’s “Rap Devil,” “Killshot,” quite possibly ended MGK’s career as a rapper and forced him to change genres. It shows how Marshall is willing to cross boundaries even Eminem won’t to defend the ones he truly cares about. He is known for giving the audience a small window into his actual life, rather than covering it up with wacky lines like Slim Shady Vincent Baragan (‘28), is an avid Eminem listener. Barragan said, “I think Marshall Mathers is definitely the more self aware persona.” Vincent also said he associates Mathers with songs “Beautiful” and “Somebody Save Me,” and “Half of ‘Recovery.’” Marshall also gave us Eminem’s most lighthearted and inspiring songs, “Somebody Save Me” and “Mockingbird.” These songs brought listeners to tears and are genuinely a moving collection that showcases a lighter side of Eminem, not commonly seen in his work.
EMINƎM
EMINƎM is the rapper’s chosen name. He serves up the fresh and fast bars his fans know and love and have come to expect. Unlike Marshall Mathers, EMINƎM is not supposed to be likable. He is cold, unforgiving, and highly aggressive. The rapper created the name Eminem by combining his initials, and to avoid being sued by M&M’s, he spelled it out instead. EMINƎM is a combination of Slim Shady and Marshall, just like the name itself. He is known for his fast lines and lyrical genius and is making more and more appearances in Eminem’s albums. He is the lead character in almost all of Eminem’s newer albums, and has recently taken a darker turn. His rise to predominance started in the Marshall Mathers LP II, when he broke records with 9.6 syllables per second in his fastest bar. EMINƎM also dropped disses on rappers P Diddy and Joe Budden, among others. EMINƎM destroyed Benzino and Melle Mel on his last album, “The Death of Slim Shady,” for their opinions on his career and how they think he does not deserve his position as one of the Top 5 greatest rappers of all time. When a fan, Luka Vukelic(‘29) thinks about Eminem “I think about ‘Lose Yourself’ and ‘8 Mile.’” EMINƎM is also the rapper’s choice to speak out to his fans. This is first shown when this persona was introduced in “The Marshall Mathers LP” in “Stan,” where he explained how he does not want his fans to be crazy over him, but he appreciates their love. EMINƎM is a dangerous and powerful persona that will end careers just as easily as Marshall and Slim when given the chance.
Slim Shady
Finally, Slim Shady is the “Devil” on rapper Eminem’s shoulder, constantly struggling between right and wrong with Marshall Mathers and coming up with the rapper’s out-of-pocket and offensive lines that shocked audiences and first propelled Eminem to fame. He is famously known for his denim overalls, old-fashioned goalie hockey mask, chainsaw, and bleached-blond hair, a wild look to complement his already insane persona. He is the dominant persona in almost all of Eminem’s early work, from “The Slim Shady LP” to “Relapse: Refill.” Slim primarily revolves around shock value rapping. The lines, “Oh, wait, no way, you’re kidding. He didn’t just say what I think he did, did he?” (Mathers, Marshall. “The Real Slim Shady” Marshall Mathers, 2001, https://www.eminem.com/song/real-slim-shady/) perfectly sum up the whole persona. Slim Shady’s voice is significantly higher than Marshall’s and EMINƎM’s, and his songs usually cover more sensitive and offensive topics. He leaves audiences gasping with disses on Michael Jackson, Christopher Reeves, and Donald Trump, and shows that there is a small part of Eminem that does not want to grow up in terms of maturity. Whether it is negative or positive, the only thing Slim Shady truly wants is attention. An avid Eminem listener, Kaden Townsen(‘26) He said it is Slim’s “Unhinged comedic aspects” and that he is “Not afraid to speak what comes to his mind,” which truly separates him from Eminem’s other two personas. Townsen also said that the three songs he mainly attributes to Slim Shady are “Without Me,” “The Real Slim Shady,” and “Just Lose It,” the latter of which is the cause for Michael Jackson to buy Eminem’s entire music catalog because of Eminem’s diss. It goes without saying that Slim Shady is deployed only whenever Eminem feels it is entirely necessary, and he almost always causes controversy whenever he is let loose. In Eminem’s most recent album, “The Death of Slim Shady,” the rapper’s persona, Marshall Mathers, grows tired of Slim’s rude and offensive behavior. When Slim tries to get Marshall canceled by Gen-Z, along with all the stress Slim has put on Marshall over their thirty-six-year rap career, he finally snaps and decides to put Slim out for good. This internal struggle between right and wrong suggests that Marshall has possibly finally decided to stop relying on Slim for coming up with offensive lyrics, and there will be fewer and fewer appearances for Slim later in Eminem’s career.
All these characters are personifications of the self. Eminem has made a vast number of personas to amplify his emotions, but these three stand out the most. They all offer a window into a different part of his life, Slim representing his younger years, and Marshall and EMINƎM an older version of the rapper after fame. Each of these helps the audience better understand the enigma that is Eminem.
