Chemistry Rocks!

This summer, catch the “We’re Not Rockers, That’s Geology, Fool!” tour with hit rock band, The Naked Mol Rats, which is comprised of our very own chemistry teachers!

The Naked Mol Rats features Ms. Marees, on guitar and as front woman, Mr. Rivera, on drums, Mr. Bullington, on bass, and Mr. Lazaraton, using his experience from being in a childhood boy band, playing the triangle.

Their debut tour will feature songs from their self-titled album, including their hit single, “I Got My Ion You”. Featuring such charged lyrics as, “You’re too good to be true, I’ve got my ion you. You’d be like Helium to touch, I want to observe you so much.”

The band is known for their explosive performances. Literally.

Concert-goer and fashion consultant, Tim Gunn, noted, “There was a lot of fire and smoke and it smelled funny. I didn’t exactly know what was going on, though, because my safety goggles kept fogging up and it was kind of hard to hear what they were saying.”

On stage, the band wears matching lab coats and at the end of every show they dip their instruments in liquid nitrogen and smash them on the stage.

Giving tribute to their first profession as educators, the band has strict rules for its audience, which they pass out on laminated handouts at the beginning of every show. Audience members must be wearing closed-toed shoes and have their hair tied back at all times.

Hardcore fans who can recite the entire periodic table are given old safety glasses and autographed exam review sheets. It is not uncommon to see fans sitting down with textbooks and notes before concerts studying for post concert pop quizzes.

The Naked Mol Rats do their own special effects and challenge the audience to figure out the correct stoichiometry for all of the reactions. “Sometimes when we don’t know how much of something to add, we take suggestions from the audience and just go with whatever happens, just to prove we’re loose, we’re rock stars.”

Their rallying cry, “For Science!” is found on phone backgrounds, t-shirts, and bumper stickers all over Jacksonville.

This summer, the band is going on tour with pop punk band, Tequila Mockingbird, made of Mr. Dickson, Mr. Stam, Mr. Creter, and Mr. Mulvey.
