How to read an editorial cartoon

Top Five Things to Look For:

  1. Look for visual symbols and metaphors. You’ve all done English class, so you know what that is.
  2. Look for visual distortion (i.e. when an object or person is portrayed larger or smaller as a way to show importance or power).
  3. Look for irony in words and images. Again, English class.
  4. Look for stereotypes and caricatures. Stereotypes are used to try and clarify a certain group of people, while caricatures are used to depict individuals by magnifying certain characteristics.
  5. Look for the core argument or opinion. While journalism is objective, editorial cartoons are not and not meant to be.
