Frenemies? Bolles Rivalries

Kennedy McKinney, Contributing Writer

If anyone ever asks how I got my competitive spirit the answer would automatically be from The Bolles School. Ever since lower school I have been surrounded by my classmates cheering on the Bulldogs to beat their toughest opponents which was always either Episcopal, Bishop Kenny, or Raines.

But which one of these rivalries is the toughest?

Out of fifteen students, eleven said Bishop Kenny, two said Episcopal, and two said Raines. “Bishop Kenny is definitely our toughest competition, especially when it comes to volleyball” said Madison Clubb (‘19). While Oliver Barakat (‘19) argued that Episcopal was hard to beat due to “petty” errors that take place during games and meets.

Bolles fans do a lot to get hyped up for the competition by having themed games and pins that are available to purchase from the bookstore with phrases such as “Beat Kenny” or “Beat Episcopal”.

However, our toughest opponent does not do this.

Anna Hernandez, a Bishop Kenny student, said that Kenny does not get nearly as pumped up for rivalry games. “Bolles is definitely one of our main rivals but we don’t do anything special for games against them. It is exciting if we beat you guys though!”.

If kept friendly, school rivalries can be used as a way to show your school spirit and root for your athletes with your classmates.
